Consonant Sounds

In addition to vowels, the English alphabet is also made up of consonants. While vowels represent open-mouthed speech sounds, consonants represent sounds that are made when part or the entire mouth is closed as they require a specific position of the lips, cheeks and tongue etc.

Consonants sounds are produced with a complete or partial stopping of the air flow through the mouth. There are 24 consonant sounds in English.
