What is American Dream ?

The notion of 'American Dream' stands for a belief or hope that anyone irrespective of their social class, gender and race can achieve their own version of success through their effort and hard work. As the great America offers endless opportunities and freedom to all.

The term 'American Dream' was coined by James Adams in his much celebrated work 'The Epic of America' (1931). The ideology of American dream is rooted in the declaration of independence. which, declares that all are equal with right to life, liberty and enjoy happiness.

Later on people realized the fact that it was just an illusion or mere a dream. No chance for implementing in real life especially in the case of lower middle class people. It remains still an utopian vision.

Thus, shattering of American Dream becomes a significant theme in modern American literature in general and the works or Arthur Miller in particular. The notable plays of  Arthur Miller such as Death of a salesman and All my sons clearly state the nature of American dream. The protagonists of the play  Willy Loman and Joe Keller could not achieve material success in real life even they worked hard. As a result they became morally degenerated deceptive in real life.
